Coreley with the Knowle

coreley The parish of St Peter’s Coreley is located on the SE slopes of Clee Hill, is a rural area with the main employment being agriculture. The majority of people have to travel outside the parish for work.

The population includes all age groups from school children to senior citizens – the children have to travel to Clee Hill for primary education and Cleobury Mortimer for secondary.

As well as St Peter’s Church, the parish includes a Mission Room at The Knowle. St Peter’s was built c1200AD and whilst the original tower and steeple remain the rest of the building was rebuilt during the 1600s.

At present St Peter’s has two services each month – one each of Holy Communion and Evensong – and The Knowle, one service of Holy Communion. All services are Common Worship.

The PCC organise regular coffee mornings in the Memorial Hall which have become a social focal point for the village. The village has a vibrant Junior Football Club and together with the PCC and the Memorial Hall committee, organise several social events each year.

A Summer Tea Party

Somebody, somewhere must surely have written a poem in praise of the perfect summer tea party: a party held on a day when the sun shines from dawn to dusk, with no threat of rain or errant breeze to dampen the spirits – or the sandwiches and cake – or ruffle the tablecloths and elegant sunhats (if any). It was just such a day when Michael and Augusta hosted a tea party prepared by the Maramba Link team at The Coombes in aid of the Maramba project. Visitors arrived – ferried across the three fields from the gate by kind people with Land Rovers. For the next two or three hours we partook of the most generous tea – sandwiches – cucumber and egg of course – scones, jam, cream and cake. Those so inclined wandered around the lovely garden, and enjoyed a most interesting talk on thatching by a master of the craft. I don’t know how much was raised for the project, but it was a most enjoyable afternoon. Thank you all so much.

Cricket v Hope Bagot

Can you believe it? It is almost upon us once again. This year’s match will take place as usual on Bank Holiday Monday August 30th at The Knowle Sports Field commencing at 2 pm. This year it is Whitton’s turn to provide the cakes and Hope Bagot to provide the tea and soft drinks.

Preaching Cross Service

This is being held one month later than normal due to the Greete Open Gardens event being held on June 27th. So come and join us on Sunday July 25th for our annual service around the Medieval Preaching Cross at 10 am, followed by lunch in the churchyard (weather permitting). Offers of food to Kath please. We look forward once again to a good congregation. We would also be pleased to receive offers of help to cut the grass around the Preaching Cross. Thank You.

Deanery Evensong

The Deanery Evensong and supper will be held at St. Laurence’s Church, Ludlow on Thursday 22nd July at 7.30 pm. All parishioners are warmly invited, so please come and join us if you can. It is usually a most uplifting occasion.

PCC Meeting

Just to remind you that the next PCC meeting will be held in church on Monday 26th July at 7.30 pm. The main item of business will be discussion on the quinquennial inspection report from our architect Mr Peter Taylor. Also to remind you if anyone would be interested in joining the PCC we have two vacancies; if you require any information on the workings of the PCC, please contact either Tony or Michael.

Christian Aid

The house-to-house collection amounted to £142.50 of which £125 was gift aided. Thank you to all who responded so generously to this worthwhile charity.

Another Wedding

We are delighted to have a second wedding booked for 2011. Beth Harper and James Smith have set the date for their wedding – Saturday 6th August at St. Mary’s Church, another special event to look forward to. We also send our congratulations and best wishes to Beth on qualifying as a primary school teacher with BA Hons.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Maisie Wall (aged 9) on her outstanding success in a Judo Competition held at Ludlow Leisure Centre on Sunday 16th May. She won all her fights and received a trophy and a medal. She started Judo 6 months ago. Keep up the good work. Don’t mess with Maisie boys!!

Well Done

Congratulations to Kath Bills who was presented with a well deserved Civic Award “in acknowledgment of dedicated and excellent service to Ludlow”. The presentation was made by the incoming Mayor, John Aitken, at the Mayor Making Ceremony held in the Assembly Rooms on Wednesday May 26th 2010. The award was in recognition of her work with the Social Enterprise Scheme which is based in Ludlow and covers South Shropshire. Kath runs the Tea Room as a volunteer, opening on Monday and Friday each week at the rear of the Renaissance Centre which is part of the South Shropshire Furniture Scheme. Well done Kath.
