Shrove Tuesday

This will actually (just) make it into next month’s magazine, but some people may wish to start dieting now before the traditional Pancake Evening at the Village Hall on March 8th. A modest (i.e. not yet decided) entrance fee allows you to sample as many delicious pancakes as you like, with a variety of both conventional and exotic fillings. A date for your diary.

New ten o’clock service

A slight correction to last month’s news, in that unfortunately Don won’t be able to play for us, as the moving of the service from the second to the third Sunday means he has prior commitments at Greete. Although we (and you) can still enjoy his musicianship at Evensong, on the first Sunday each month. We have managed to find a replacement, however, who we hope will be able to fill his shoes, for this month’s service at least, and possibly for longer.

Christmas Fair

Lots of hard work for the few, but well attended and raised a magnificent £942, which is five pounds more than last year, so I guess another record! Many thanks to all who supported this in any way, and a special mention to the raffle for the Christmas hamper, which on its own brought in £506. Profits are shared between the Hall and the Church.

Christmas Day

We welcomed Hilary to lead the service, which she did to the manner born. We were also indebted to her daughter-in-law, Shu Xia, a very talented concert violinist who played the keyboard for the hymns. Being a keyboard, of course, it was able to sound like a full size church organ. There was also a wonderful moment during the offertory hymn when a mobile phone went off (no names, no pack drill). What made it slightly surreal was the ring tone, which was a cockerel crowing, leading several people to look round the church for an errant bird! Oh, and another record attendance to boot, despite the temperature and the snow.

Carol Service

Our best attendance yet, which is even more encouraging as the snow really did lie deep, crisp and even: about eight inches deep in places. However, the frost meant we were able to use Jim Steven’s field as an overflow car park (thanks as always) and we had a congregation of eighty-five! Three figures next year? Thanks to Kath for leading us, to all the young readers who read so beautifully, to Josie the organist, to Andy and Cliff for helping ‘the band’, to all our flower people for the floral displays and last but not least to Janet and Bill for organising the mince pies and wine. A super start to our Christmas celebration.

You can see from the rotas I publish every week that a lot of people work hard to keep our church alive and attractive to visitors. There are many others too, who make contributions of one sort or another, all of which are valued. You might say the village is lucky to have a lovely church, but I think we are lucky to have a village in which the people display such a positive attitude. You know who you are, and we are very grateful.

Christmas Lunch

In the Village Hall on Sunday December 5th. I have a feeling that if you haven’t got your tickets already you may be disappointed, but you can try Janet or Marg. Followed by a now traditional Christmas sing-a-long.

Carol Service and Christmas Day

The Carol Service is on Sunday December 19th at 4.30pm. We get a great attendance at this: this year we want to break the magic hundred barrier. Even if you’re mainly attracted by the wine and mince pies!

Holy Communion on Christmas Day is at 10.00am. We would love to see you there, making a great start to this special day.

Christmas Art Competition

This will be running again after a successful initial go last year. Open to children/young people up to 16 years old with family connections to the parish, it will be further publicised in the Little Hereford Newsletter. The challenge is to make a Christmas picture, using any materials and being as creative as you like. It will be judged by local artists, who spent a long time deliberating last year. There is a gift for every entry, as well as prizes, and the entries will be displayed in church at the Carol Service. Entries need to be in the big box in church by December 12th, or given to Carolyn.
