So far Ray and Sue Amos have passed over £300 to our treasurer for Greete Church and our ‘agent’ in the North East says he hasn’t finished his sales drive yet! Though he is at present recovering from a knee operation and is unable to drive, restricting his sales ‘patch’.

Although very cold and the coldest December on record; just beating 1981, when we later had snow with wind, filling the roads level with the tops of the hedges in many places; we did get off lightly as far as snow was concerned this time. Temperatures down to at least -12oC at Greete and -16oC at Woofferton, were low enough to cause problems with non winter grade diesel in tractors and in Scotland certainly, even the road diesel in vehicles. Apparently normal road diesel clouds at 0oC, and starts to gel at -10oC. So with the wind chill of forward motion, problems are likely. As I am, always being ‘got at’ for continuing to ‘Beetle’, I will just point out that for the 39th year I didn’t have to worry about the strength of my antifreeze, being air-cooled, diesel problems or lack of traction.

It had been decided to cancel the combined Greete-Whitton carol service at Greete due to the icy roads, but we did not want to cancel Christmas and so the Carol Party and Christmas Day service went ahead as planned despite a good covering of snow. Thanks especially to Robin Huntbach for transporting Revd Claire Lording and organist Don, and Jean Hearn to and from the Carol Party and to David Rawlings for completely clearing the church path for the Christmas Day service. Thanks are due to John Davies for the Christmas tree and also to Robin and Carl Huntbach and Raymond Horton for snow ploughing and salting the roads. You don’t realise how lucky you are in Greete!

When I took Dad (92) to see Ivy Horton and Dorothy Fletcher recently, they got talking of times past and I thought that all who go past the oak tree on the triangle by Greete Brook, would like to know that it was planted by Jim Paget. He was the local road lengthsman who tended with care and much effort, the road from Greete to Caynham and also the Greete to Tenbury Station road, including that up to The Greenwayhead. It would also be of interest to know what year he planted the tree if anyone knows or can work it out by other events.

The last roadman on the Greete-Tenbury length was the late Geof Reynolds and the last on the Greete-Caynham, was Stanley Mantle in the late 1960’s. The latter was immortalised in verse by the late great local character Dennis Crowther, as ‘the finest little roadman of the day’. However they are all sadly missed, because they could all, I am sure, not just Stan, ‘smell a gobbed up gutter a mile away’, as Dennis said.

To Roger and Lynne Blandford who moved from Worcester to Middledale at the end of last year. I told them that to some, their new home is still known as ‘Shoey Lewis’s’. Mr Lewis ran his local cobbling business from a shed there up until the 1950’s. As far as I know, there is still a recreation of his workshop at Tenbury Museum. I hope Roger and Lynne will be very happy here.

On hearing that we needed help on the church cleaning and flower rota, Lynne volunteered. She is going to help Diana Quinney and another ‘new’ recruit Georgie Peacock in January. Janet Doyle has agreed to fill the November gap left by Tonya Green, with Lynsey Summers. So thanks to you all we are back to full strength for the new season.

A big thank you to all on the rota for keeping the church clean and looking cared for and welcoming to visitors, with attractive floral displays, through another year. Thanks are especially due to June Reynolds who has had to retire from her January stint after many years. June also delivered the parish magazine for a long time.

So we do need at least two more helpers for January and November to support the other person on the rota, We do only have two services a month, very occasionally three. Please let me know, especially if you have an artistic flair with flowers and can help Diana Quinney in January especially.

At this time of year I would like, along with Jean Wall, to thank all those who have helped with the running of the church and all the events connected with it and fund raising for it. Especially to thank Jean and Tom for readying the church, particularly when I am absent. Also the Rawlings family for responding to some crises, welcoming and informing visitors and ensuring the heating is working and on for services. Finally Robin Huntbach for keeping the accounts in order. Yes, I know we need more money We hope to hold another fete next summer.

I know I unfortunately can not wish you all a happy Christmas as this year has been particularly hard and sad for some of you and some of your troubles continue. But I trust that all of you realise that in this community, goodwill does not start and end with Christmas.

Howard Cheese
