By the time that this issue of the magazine is delivered, Christmas will be a distant memory but our rousing Carol Service, led by Hilary, was a very good way to start our celebration, even though the harsh weather made trudging up the church path rather interesting, to say the least.

Edward and I were away for Christmas, so we missed both Midnight Mass and Judith’s leaving service but we gather that they were very special services and that about 34 people were at the Christmas Eve service. Even though the thermometer went down to about -21C on Boxing Day, a good number were able to say their farewells to Judith. Thanks go to Mary for providing refreshments after the service.

For those who remember the Evison family, we were saddened to learn of the death of Edith (Edie), who lived in Burford for many years before moving to be with her daughter, Ann. Our thoughts are with Ann and Raymond and all the family. There will be a Thanksgiving service for her life at Burford, probably at the end of March. More details to follow.

The snowdrops are still underground (Raymond thinks they are probably flowering in Australia) so please watch out for notices along the roadside and in the press for when we will be holding our Snowdrop Weekends.

The Heritage Lottery Fund are happy with the way that we have used their money and Philip is using the next slice of our HLF grant to purchase display boards for the church.

I hope that our readers are coping with the harsh weather and various bugs that are around. Birds are beginning to sing, so spring must be on its way.

It seems strange to be thinking about Advent and Christmas when we haven’t had Remembrance Sunday but the editorial deadline means that I must remind you that our annual Carol Service will take place on Sunday 19 December at 6.30 pm. This very special service is suitable for all ages and it is always a delight to see young children singing “Away in a Manger” and other carols, so please do bring your family to see the Christmas tree and to share in the start of the Church’s celebration of Christmas.

The service of Midnight Mass will start at 11.30pm on Christmas Eve: all are welcome.

This seems a good time to give a big, collective “thank-you” and to send Christmas Greetings to all the people who have cleaned the church, worked in the churchyard, arranged flowers, helped at events, run the lottery, played at our services, read lessons, rung bells, acted as sidespeople, been members of the PCC or helped in any way and of course the biggest thanks go to the members of the clergy and members of the LMT who have led our worship throughout the year.

The next instalment of our Heritage Lottery Fund grant should come through before the end of the year. At the moment a written and photographic record is being compiled of all that has been achieved so far. This will form part of a permanent record that will be displayed on boards inside the church.

Looking through all the material, it is fascinating to see how many different people have taken part in our events, as ‘performers’ or ‘congregation/audience’. St Mary’s is a social hub as well as a place of worship and we hope to improve lighting and information in the not too distant future, to make the church more welcoming to visitors.

If you read the Visitors Book, you will see that we have welcomed people from many different countries and from all areas of the UK and they do seem to have enjoyed their visits.

In the absence of the Thomas family (you were missed!) Team Yarnold coped very well and Anne laid on a lovely supper for us to enjoy. Thanks go to them and to all who decorated the church, provided produce or helped in any way.

A group of thirty nine pupils (ages 12 to 17) from Tara Anglican School for Girls overcame jet lag to sing at our service of Evensong on 26 September. Accompanied by Michael Griffiths, members of staff and parents, they really enlivened our worship and their rendition of the Benediction was incredibly moving and very memorable.
For many of the girls this was their first trip away from home, let alone abroad but they coped superbly and were a credit to their school.

Thanks go to Revd Judith, Raymond, Tom, Philip and Robert Gordon-Blacker, who all played a part in welcoming the group. The party enjoyed a tour of the church and learnt about the Heritage Lottery Fund grant that enabled them to have a photograph taken next to the restored preaching cross, without risk of it collapsing onto them.

We hope to keep in contact with this school and maybe welcome them again on their next visit to the UK.
