War Memorial at St Mary’s

Many of you will have noticed that one section of the war memorial is looking a bit worse for wear. The recent cold and frosty weather has helped to speed up the deterioration of a stone that already had inherent weaknesses. After consultation with our architect, the Royal British Legion and the Diocesan Advisory Committee the PCC has been told that the best way forward would be to replace the damaged stone.

At the moment we are going through the final legal process that will give permission for this work to be carried out, but we are confident that this will be granted very soon as we have already had a positive recommendation from the Diocesan Advisory Committee. It is hoped that Kevin Griffin, a local stonemason and monumental sculptor, will be carrying out the work, which we hope will be finished in time for Remembrance Sunday this year. It is estimated that the cost of the work will be in the region of £1500. We anticipate writing to our many local organisations to see if they would like to make a contribution to the cost of the works. All donations will be gratefully received and should be made payable to St Mary’s Church, Tenbury Wells and placed in an envelope with ‘War Memorial’ on the front. Many thanks in anticipation.
