St. Mary’s Church was the chosen venue for the Soup and Puds event to help raise funds for the Maramba Deanery in Tanzania. Not having organised a lunch like this before we were in uncharted territory so we targeted on a possible 40 people coming. How wrong we were when to our amazement 70 guests came to enjoy the occasion.
A lot of work was put into preparing the food which was at such a high standard that some folk felt they were being charged too little for their meal. What they didn’t realise was that as the queue got longer the size of the portions were discreetly reduced until we hoped no one else would come as the food was about to run out. We did manage to serve the last person in but the choice was limited.
Stalls were arranged so that no one could avoid the tombola, raffle and sale of books all of which proved very successful and the poor fellow selling raffle tickets got cramp writing down nearly 400 telephone numbers. Altogether £380 was raised and grateful thanks must go to the members of the Tanzanian committee who worked so hard to make it such an enjoyable ‘get together’ – not forgetting the extra ‘volunteers’ who helped to make light work of the washing up.
For those of you who have read this far please note that we are again organising a sponsored walk for Saturday, 24th April. Details to follow in next month’s magazine but please keep the date free for an enjoyable spring walk in the countryside.
