It was a measure of the affection and respect in which Colin was held that so many people assembled on that freezing January day for his funeral at Whitton. In last month’s mag Claire quoted from a poem asking what a priest should be. I feel sure that it must have gone on to say something to the effect that a priest must be a shepherd responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of his flock; a bridge between the people and their God, a sort of signpost to heaven. Duncan in his address made just such a point – Colin, he said, brought God to the people and the people to God and that surely, is above all else, the work of a priest.
