In Memory of Philip

During the restoration work to the tower last year the remains of the large wrought iron oil lanterns that used to light the church before electricity was installed sometime in the 1950’s, were discovered. On comparing the pieces with some old photographs of the period we were able to put together one complete lamp except for its oil reservoir and wick holder. Later, when the earth floor to the churchyard shed was being dug out during its restoration, we came across these missing items. This one lamp has now been completely renovated and re-hung at the entrance to the Baptistery. It is hoped that we can now obtain an Archdeacons licence to add a plaque in memory of Philip Nunn and to record his generous bequest to St. Mary’s.
